Event Description
How do I teach a syllabus I didn’t design? What am I supposed to be doing every week in discussion section? What is a “norming session”? Graduate teaching assistants often operate within a hidden curriculum—a set of norms and assumed knowledge that may not be made transparent. This workshop will help TAs identify and make explicit aspects of the TA role that often go unexplained in TA training, from logistical concerns to disciplinary norms.

You’ll come away from the workshop with ways to assess a syllabus and determine your priorities for planning your section, a set of questions you might ask your supervisor at the start of the semester, and strategies for using the course learning goals and major assessments to make the most of your time as a TA and support effective student learning.
