Authentic Video
Description:
Instructor prepares an authentic video clip from a popular TV show, along with comprehension questions to be completed individually and discussed in pairs. Comprehension questions require the student to listen in stages, moving from first listening for broad understanding, then for more detailed information.
Modifications:
Faculty can work with students on developing L2 listening behaviors, like building listening stamina (listening to longer chunks of language without using the pause button) and listening multiple times, by controlling student access to pause/rewind features. Students can work at their own pace, while having a partner available to confer with on challenging questions, or with whom they can expand conversation based on the clip. Students can listen to different passages, offering jigsaw activity possibilities. Listening work can lead into paired discussion of clip content.
