Lab Activity

Help the Tourist

Description:

The instructor divides the class into two groups. Each group has a map of the University of Virginia grounds. Group one is the assigned the role of a college student studying the target language, and group two is assigned the role of a visitor from a country of the target language's origin. The college student gives the visitor directions to particular areas on campus using the maps the two have in front of them. Groups switch roles and are paired with a new partner.

Modifications:

Students may record the activity and evaluate their performance and effectiveness in giving directions in the target language.  Students may also share the recording with other students for review and comments on their use of the target language. The recording may also be played for the entire class for review.
