Lab Activity

Furniture Shopping

Description:

Students are randomly paired with a partner. The team is given a budget (e.g., 400 euros) to purchase furniture for their apartment / dorm room. The students must first discuss which items they need and make a shopping list. They are provided with links to one or more websites in the target language. These may include actual furniture stores (both high end and value) as well as online marketplaces or classified ad pages.

While searching for each furniture item on their list, students must communicate with their partner in the target language and note the price, size, material and location of each item. At the end of the lesson, the partners determine if they found everything that they needed & stayed under budget.

Modifications:

Students may be given a set list of items to search for with specifications about dimensions, material, etc.

Possible follow-up activities:

  1. Students conduct a mock phone call with a seller, regarding one or more items of furniture from their list. They must inquire about dimensions, material, pick-up or delivery times/locations, and negotiate the price.
  2. Students write a blog post telling a friend about their new apartment/dorm and furniture.
