Description:

Instructor provides links to some major news outlets in the target language (might be all in one country, or across several countries) and asks students to identify some of the major news stories of the day by skimming headlines and utilizing their background knowledge of current events. In pairs or small groups, students discuss differences they notice in what is covered by one outlet vs. another. As time allows, they select one article to more thoroughly investigate with their partner, and then share information about that article with a new partner.

Modifications:

As time and students’ proficiency levels allow, they select one news item and examine how it is covered in multiple news outlets. Advanced students can explore some nuances of language use in the news coverage.
