The Language Commons & Alcove

(New Cabell Hall 298 Suite, M-Th 8:30am-9pm, F 8:30am-5pm)

The Language Commons is an open-floorplan space devoted to language learning, intercultural exchange, and collaboration. The Commons is equipped with computer work stations, white boards, monitors, and flexible seating options for group and individual work. The space regularly hosts activities and programming in support of language learning and teaching at UVA, often in cooperation with language programs and student organizations.The Language Commons Alcove is a smaller space equipped with glass boards, monitors, and flexible seatings. It is designed for group study, meetings, and individual study. Click for a virtual tour.

For UVA language instructors, the Language Commons maintains the ibtiKart Instructional Resource Cart, which contains a variety of resources for interactive class activities, games, discussions, and prototyping. A list of ibtiKart supplies and activity suggestions is available on the cart. The LC also hosts the ePortfolio Peer Consultant program.

The Language Lab  

(NCH 299, M-F 9am-5pm & by appt)

The Language Lab is a 24-station computer lab providing alternative, innovative means of language learning focusing on collaboration and interaction students and faculty. Popular activities in the lab include pairing/grouping students for conversation, recording students for self-assessment, and administering oral exams.
