About the Language Commons

The Language Commons is a shared resource for UVa’s vibrant community of world language learners and instructors. Serving the UVa College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Commons offers a state-of-the art language lab, collaboration spaces, programming, online resources, and faculty consultations. As a component of UVa’s Learning Design and Technology (LD&T) team, the work of the Language Commons draws on the principles of Intentionality, Authenticity, and Engagement in supporting effective language learning and instruction on Grounds.


Language Commons Spaces in New Cabell Hall

• Language Commons: an open-concept space for conversation, group work, tutorials, activities, and events (opening 2017)

• Language Lab (NCH 299): a 24-station lab for instructional activities (open!)

• LC Alcove (NCH 298): a place for small group collaboration, study, and discussion (opening 2017)

• One-Button Studio (NCH 277): an easy-to-use video recording space for student & faculty projects (opening 2017)
